Job Capacity Assessment (JCA)

Job Capacity Assessment is a key part of the Australian Government’s Welfare to Work initiative.  Under Welfare to Work, people with disabilities, injuries or illness will be encouraged and assisted to participate in the workforce to their full capacity.  In order to determine a person’s level of capacity, the Job Capacity Assessment process has been introduced.

As a Job Capacity Assessment provider, IMPACT may receive client referrals from Centrelink, Vocational Rehabilitation Services and or Disability Employment Networks (DEN).

The Job Capacity Assessment is a comprehensive assessment of a person’s ability to work.  The assessment involves the identification of a person’s barriers to work and any interventions that may be required to help them overcome those barriers.  If a client applies for Disability Support Pension, or has identified barriers to work or a medical condition that prevents them from working, they will generally require a Job Capacity Assessment.

Job Capacity Assessment’s will be done face to face in most cases (with some limited exceptions).  IMPACT’s assessor will have information on the person’s medical and income support history where appropriate, to enable them to adequately perform the assessment.

Once a person’s capacity for work has been assessed, people may be referred to an employment service provider or support service that meets their individual needs.  Any referral to services will occur at the time of the assessment.  Services may include Job Services Australia or the Disability Employment Network.  Where an income support decision is required, IMPACT, as the Job Capacity Assessor, will send a report to Centrelink which informs this decision.  IMPACT will prepare a report about the person's work capacity.  This report will be provided to Centrelink, and where applicable, a decision will be made by Centrelink about the type of income support for which the client is eligible.
