After a
prolonged period of unemployment, Shelly considered her options and
decided that undertaking training for a new and exciting career
path may be the solution to her current situation.
She was
advised about a variety of courses being delivered at IMPACT and
decided to undertake training in 'Reception Skills' in the hope of
obtaining employment or a traineeship.
During the
6 week course, she developed many essential skills that are needed
in an office environment. For Example:
- typing
skills
- process
simple word documents
- create
customer relationships
- communicate in the
workplace
- create and
use spreadsheets
After
completing the course, she was still supported in her quest for
work.
Barbara
Chapman, a Job Placement Officer, identified a vacancy, interviewed
and assessed Shelly's work abilities and skills on behalf of
Burnett Respite Centre, forwarded her resume plus notes from the
interview.
Shelly was
successful in gaining the position and then commenced the
traineeship for a Certificate III in Business Administration with
the Burnett Respite Centre on the 21/07/08.
She will be
completing her off-the-job training with IMPACT Make Your Mark User
Choice Traineeship Program.
Almost a
month down the track, Shelly is still enjoying working with Burnett
Respite Centre as a Business Administration trainee.
When Joanne
signed up for the Skilling Queenslanders for Work, Parents &
Carers Program in early 2008, she had not worked for eight
years.
Prior to
this she had done some home based child care while she had her own
children.
Joanne was
very keen to gain the necessary skills to re-enter the workforce,
and completed the Cafe / Kitchenhand course at IMPACT. She then
completed at Spiritus Meilene Residential Care Services as a
kitchen assistant.
The
Management at Spiritus Meilene were very impressed by Joanne's work
and her abilities, as well as her gentle and friendly
personality.
When her
work placement finished recently, they employed her as one of their
cooks, and have offered to pay for further hospitality training at
TAFE.
Joanne is
very happy, and enjoying the challenge of her new
position.
Last year
John Stacey was referred to the Disability Employment Network (DEN)
at IMPACT by Centrelink due to barriers he was facing in his search
for work. At this point in his life John says:
"My
circumstances were about as bad as they could be prior to my
joining the DEN program. I was severely depressed and had albeit
withdrawn from normal social interaction and activities. I was
living in an emergency accommodation hostel, which didn't help
matters and my self confidence was very low"
John's
Training and Placement Officer Greg Redgard realising that John
already had very good working
knowledge of computers and had done volunteer work for Lifeline
fixing old computers and putting together cheap packages for
students and pensioners. Because of this obvious interest in the IT
field and his request for more training, Greg found John a Work for
the Dole position with Wide Bay TAFE's Bundaberg campus where he
started in August 2007. John's confidence grew with each success
and in October 2007 the TAFE offered him a paid position as an
Administrative Officer.
As much as
John enjoyed this position he was still having some personal issues
which were affecting his ability to focus on his commitments, the
main one being his living arrangements. Greg Redgard arranged to
help John move to new accommodation, which greatly improved
the client's living conditions and well being. John said that his
experience with Greg was fantastic and that his selfless attitude
and assistance have made his life a lot easier. John has now
completed Certificate II in Information Technology as a
prerequisite to studying for Diploma level at TAFE, as well as
working there and hopes to become a TAFE tutor in the IT field
in the near future.
