Debbie and Derek
find separate paths that lead to fulfilled
lives…..
Debbie and
Derek, a couple who came to the Mental Health Carers Support
Service in extreme crisis, were certainly at breaking point.
Derek was the carer of Debbie who had a diagnosis of
schizophrenia, acquired brain injury and substance abuse
disorder. Derek struggled with his own substance abuse
of alcohol and very occasional marijuana use which made caring for
Debbie more difficult.
They were
both committed to the necessity to change, but didn’t know where to
begin. Derek was on considerable amounts of medication
for pain, depression and anxiety and the roles were reversed when
Debbie was caring for Derek. When IMPACT began
supporting this couple there were many areas that needed to be
managed. Financially they were not coping so IMPACT arranged
for a Financial Micromanagement firm to assist with budgeting,
advocated with the state trustee for higher living allowance,
substance abuse was worked in partnership with ATODS (Alcohol,
Tobacco and Other Drugs Service) With IMPACT’s support,
Debbie’s medication and mental health state was re-assessed
by the Mental Health Service and she was able to get a case
manager. IMPACT continued to support them both during this
process. Respite care was arranged for Debbie so
Derek got a break and we successfully convinced
Debbie to attend Bridges Clubhouse.
With the
breakup of the relationship, they have both moved on and are
successfully using the strategies learned at the Mental Health
Carers Support Service to lead successful and full lives
separately.
Sometimes
relationships cannot be saved in times of crisis and clients need
support and an understanding person to talk to in order to have the
confidence to move forward instead of feeling stuck and this was
most definitely the solution in this case.
