Latest Stories & Articles NDIS participant develops key skills, connections at IMPACT The smile on Brogen Shailer’s face is never wider than when he’s singing, swimming, bowling, drilling or doing some other activity at IMPACT Community Services. Brogen is one of the many NDIS participants who choose to use IMPACT for a range of support programs that help him develop skills, confidence and social connections. IMPACT offers a wide range of NDIS programs, many set in a group context, that can be tailored to an individual’s needs and help them get the most out of life. Brogen recently celebrated his 30th birthday. It was a special milestone as he becomes increasingly independent in his life. For Brogen, IMPACT is a space where he can develop new skills in a safe environment. On Thursdays he spends his day on site with Paul Caruana, his one-on-one support worker. “We really do the things that Brogen wants to do,” said Paul, who became a carer after suffering an injury while working as a miner. “Sometimes he loves to go into the workshop downstairs, where he does some one-on-one woodwork with the trainer (Rob). “We also do a lot of swimming.” He said Brogen enjoyed going 10-pin bowling with one of IMPACT’s NDIS groups and he also loved singing. IMPACT’s Community Choir has more than 80 members and regularly performs across the region. Paul said the services IMPACT offered enabled Brogen to engage in activities that helped him reach his potential. IMPACT’s manager of NDIS and mental health support services, Jannene Thorn said Bundaberg was a community with a high number of people who faced challenges in their lives. Ms Thorn said the NDIS was crucial in providing a pathway for participants to access support so they could improve their independence over time. She said IMPACT offered a flexibility of programs that participants could tailor to their needs. “We’re a registered National Disability Insurance Agency provider that helps people with a disability achieve their goals,” Ms Thorn said. “Services include day programs, life and living skills, social and community engagement, supported employment, support in training and education.” If you want to know more about the NDIS services IMPACT offers call 4153 4233.
