Sophie Hamann has two reasons to cheer at the minute.
Having welcomed her daughter Acacia into the world on June 18, Sophie has also just graduated from IMPACT Community Services with a CHC33015 Certificate III in Individual Support (Disability).
The course was a game changer for Sophie, who arrived in Bundaberg not knowing anyone and soon found she was pregnant.
She quickly set up a support network through her colleagues and staff on the training course.
“Everyone at IMPACT was so supportive and friendly,” Sophie said. “It’s such a great team.”
Her fellow students even threw her a surprise baby shower. There is plenty of interest in how Sophie and Acacia are going.
Both are well. However, Sophie had to give birth to Acacia who was in what is called a transverse lie (baby lays sideways) which happens about 1 in 400 births.
Acacia weighed in at 3.2kgs.
“We’re both healthy. I hadn’t even known transverse was a thing until it happened to me,” Sophie said.
“I’m so lucky, she’s healthy ... and a great sleeper.”
Sophie plans spending time with Acacia before looking for work in the disability sector.
It is a career she is excited about.
“I’m pretty keen to get in and start working. I loved the course and made life-long friends during my time at IMPACT,” Sophie said.
“I did my work placement at Localised Personalised Service (LPS) in Bundaberg and it was great … I enjoyed it so much.”
