Sandy makes an IMPACT on aged care careers Sandy Baker’s wealth of experience and industry connections ensure her aged care students have every chance of succeeding. Sandy teaches the Certificate III in Individual Support (Aged Care) at IMPACT Community Services. It’s one of a range of courses run at IMPACT, which is a registered training organisation (RTO code 0115). Like the other courses, aged care has been carefully selected as a training focus in line with the needs of the Bundaberg region’s job market. Sandy and many of the other trainers will soon be preparing for the next round of intakes. “I’ve been at IMPACT teaching for more than nine years,” said Sandy, who also trains students in First Aid. “Before this I worked in the aged care sector for some 20 years.” One of the key benefits IMPACT provides for students is industry placement. Why study at IMPACT? Great trainers who are experienced in their fields and have many strong industry connections; IMPACT will organise Vocational Placements for students; Courses are developed in line with the needs of the Bundaberg region’s job market. It’s the perfect way to enable trainees to apply what they’ve learned in the classroom. Unlike some other training providers, IMPACT organises the 120-hour Vocational Placements. Sandy takes great pride in supporting her students and ensuring they are workforce ready. “I still have people come in and see me now who graduated years ago,” she said as she reflected on some of the long-term friendships that have developed out of the training room. “I’ve trained whole families. There’s been husbands and wives, mums and daughters, brothers and sisters. I had five members of one family come through. “I really enjoy engaging with the students and helping them develop.” IMPACT’s training services manager Bronwyn Quaile said all of the organisation’s trainers were like Sandy, in that they had years of experience and strong networks of industry contacts.
